Gig Updates

Feburary 13, 2010-Saturday

Moondogs: Blawnox, PA

Shawn McDowell, Pittsburgh rock radio good guy, opened this tribute to our dear late friend Warren ‘Kingfish’ King, talkin history and da importance of trail blazers like da Fish. I was glad that Whitey Cooper came out on this special occasion to help us celebrate the life of our own, eastside of Pittsburgh guitar hero. Whitey, Harry and I opened da show with two instrumentals of mine that the Fishman opened his solo record with,”Nightclub” & “T-Bird”. “Over, Said and Done” & “Comin’ Home” softened things up before we brought Bob ‘Bubs’ McKeag up to sing the beautiful song he wrote when his brother passed, “Sail On”. When I found out that Mike Pella, the original bass player in The Silencers, was comin in from Cleve for da show I  knew we had to play a couple Silencers tunes together. Mike, Whitey and I ripped thru “Peter Gunn” & “Sidewalk Romeo”………..both came off well but I gotta say that I sure missed Frank Zuri on “Sidewalk”……Frank had a gig at the Count Basi Theatre in Red Bank, NJ and could not attend, also missed was Larry Siefers who was on the same gig with Frank. Wil E Tri was next to take center stage with a poem he wrote “Hail to the Kingfish”, that involved a call n’ response that got everybody in the house shoutin “Hail To da Kingfish”. Danny Stag got up on guitar while Wil E was blowin some of da best harp in these hills n’ before ya know it, Kenny Blake starts blowin some of da best sax in dese hills……dam! After a heated two or three jams with that lineup, Wil E and Danny stepped down to leave Kenny Blake center stage to blow one of the Fish’s fav’s “Mercy, Mercy”. We then set Gil Snyder’s piano up and Gil , backed by Joe Cunningham on drums, Mike Sweeny on bass, Bubs McKeag on guitar, and Andrea Pearle on vocals laid down a couple tunes. Andrea sang “Big Boss Man” and Zak Wiesinger got up n’ smoked da plank. Dave Erny relieved Sweeny on bass after the first couple tunes. Whitey and I were joined by Dave Pella on bass to back up Gary Beloma’s vocals on “It’s All Over Now” and this Chuck Berry thang. The Juke Joint Burners, Mike Flocari on drums, Big Sexy on bass, Sam Satler on guitar and Bob Powers on lap steel sounded great doin a few tunes from their soon to be released CD that features Warren King on guitar. Da Burners were joined by Rif Mitchell for a tribute to da Fish. James Docherty led the next group of players on slide guitar. With Whitey on drums, Harry on bass, and Bobby Wayne out front singin “Turn On Your Lovelight”, set the stage for Doc to rip some serious slippin n’ slidin. The music just kept comin with Danny Stag and Wil E Tri gittin back onstage on this glorious night. I hope I didn’t forget any body that played, sorry if I did. Sorry to any body that I didn’t get on stage, Alley Cat Harry was in da house, Dan Donahue, Buddy Hall n’ Robbie Klein. This was a tribute to someone we all loved very much…………da Fish…………

Stay tuned for the latest updates! Better yet, come to one of the shows and experience "The Manful Handful" himself, first hand!
