Excuses:
Southside- Pittsburgh, Pa.
For some unexplainable reason, my
guitar was in a real good mood. I took advantage of that
during the double instrumental opening. “Bulldog” and
its minor tonality felt brand new and I don’t know why.
The casual shuffle of “Lazy Bones” inspired measured
aggression, teamwork, dat’s what makes it happen. Well
there you have it; dat’s what makes it all happen,
TEAMWORK. I was on a winning team on this Saturday
night. WC Cooper and H Bottoms brought that feel, n’ bof
o’ dem had their ears on. They was coming high n’ hard,
low n’ firm, n’ from bof sides. Make a yinzer proud to
ride wit em’. Whoa……..”White Trash Tragedy” n’ before
you know it we was slammin “Nothin to Lose” round da
tawn. I was listening to 1320 AM radio on the way to the
gig n’ they played the ole Marty Robbins classic swang
thang “Singing the Blues”. So I asked Harry to sing it,
he kicked its ass. “Loverboy” gave me the opportunity to
explore the monkey inside me. We sent “Sidewalk Romeo”
out to Terrible Tom who, by the way, has the color back
in his cheeks. Set two, “Son Of A Gun”, we got to start
playing that tune more often. “How You Like Me Now” “If
I Had a Child” “Hoochie Mama” was kickass, that tune
kind of wrote it self, but I’ll gladly take the credit.
“Ole Number 21” closed out the night and opened the
season all at the same time.

Glenn’s
Place: Altoona, Pa.
Local legends, Felix and the
Hurricanes opened the show and did a great job of
getting the party started. These guys have played a ton
a’ gigs and it shows. We opened this church meetin with
“Nightclub”, “Rock n’ Roll City”, and “Mr. Right Now”.
Folks was dancing n’ hanging, love it. “That Ain’t Gonna
Happen”, and “I Seen Too Much”………powerful. “Hoochie
Mama” continues to turn folks on, love it. Towards the
end of the show we brought Felix up on stage to jam wit
us. How bout some “It’s All Over Now”. How bout some “Barefootin”.
How bout Felix on “Bow Legged Woman” with the tickler
guitar orchestration. “Work Together”, “Mojo”, “Shake
Your Moneymaker”, we should of brought Felix up on stage
a little earlier, he’s fun to jam with.

Road Worthy Tavern:
West Liberty, West Virginia
We set up in the bar area, probably a good idea. The
first set didn’t come alive till we played “The Older I
Get”, now we’re in business. “People Takin’ Care” also
hit them hard. “If I Had a Child” really stood out. In
set two we brought ole friend Everett up to sing “Folsom
Prison Blues”. Jason Treuman got up and took over my
guitar to back Everett up on “One Way Out”, smokin. I
got back onstage to sing, while Jason played my ax.
“It’s All Over Now’ was outrageous. “Work Together” and
a simmering take on “Bow Legged Woman” really felt
strong. Treuman is a dynamite guitar player. Set three
featured “Hoochie Mama” and a slick take of Bob Dylan’s
“Like a Rolling Stone”. We missed Skibo
tonight…………………..especially on da long ride home……………………

Moondogs: Blawnox,
Pa.-Mark Stutso's CD release party
Not a good weather day in da burg. Snow and icy rain
mix. Woof, ouch n’nat, my achin a**. Got to deal with
it. Considering the situation, we had a nice turnout.
I’d like to thank those that did come out, your support
is greatly appreciated. Glenn Pavone and the Cyclones
certainly came out on this good rockin night. One song
after another was kicking tail. Drummer Frank Spritz was
bringing it with soulful vocals, love that. Of course
Mr. Pavone was smoking hot, full blown, different than
the way he would play latter that same night in support
of Mark Stutso. Tom, the love man Valentine, the
Cyclones bass man has stepped up his vocals and as
always his bass playing is the perfect compliment to da
big cheese. Can you tell I’m a fan? After a short pause
me, Whitey and Harry busted it up with “Nightclub”. I
looked at Whitey and said whatta ya wanna do? He said,
let’s rock. So let it be written, we blew up “Rock n’
Roll City” then simmered it down with “We Come A Long
Way”. Nice…………….Pavone gets back on stage, and then we
bring up Mark Stutso, star of tonight’s show. Which
celebrates the release of Stutso’s new CD “Rock My
Soul”. “Million Tears”, “Victoria’s Secret”, “You Go
Your Way”, “Just Like A Woman”, “Three Times Your Fool”
which is my favorite. Love Stutso’s vocals on that. It’s
tons of fun playing with Whitey and Harry and not having
to sing lead. I was able to enjoy being ‘part of rhythm
section’. Glenn Pavone is an extremely polite musician
and a joy to play with; his ability to go from balls to
the wall to soulful phrasing is extreme. Stutso started
relaxing and ripped “If I Had A Child”, “I Hate A
Nickel”, we sent “Bow Legged Woman” out to my sista.
Somebody said they heard “Heartbreak Shake” on the
radio, cool…….. So we kicked it ……… “Work Together”
closed out the set…… what a pleasure it is, to play with
the cast of musical characters we had at da dawg house
tonight. |
